Engineer progression fits a character who makes regular use of technology and equipment. Crafting, Tech weapons, and explosives are among the activities associated with the track. The challenge is to gain useful experience without spending resources on items you did not need or forcing a combat style that makes ordinary missions harder.

Check what you are progressing
Open Character and inspect Engineer under Skill Progression. Read the next milestone and note the current rank. Engineer skill rewards and Technical Ability choices are related parts of a technical character, but they are not interchangeable labels. Check the actual menu description before assuming a reward gives you a particular implant, perk, or equipment requirement.
Make a short inventory of the tools already in your loadout. If you carry a Tech weapon and regularly craft useful equipment, your starting plan may need only a small adjustment. If none of your preferred actions fit the track, decide whether Engineer is a priority now or something to develop gradually alongside your main style.
Put useful crafting before experience
Reserve materials for planned upgrades
Before crafting anything, identify the next upgrade you genuinely want and review the components it requires. Keep those materials in reserve. Spending components merely to move a progress bar can leave you unable to improve the weapon or implant that would make the next mission more comfortable.
Craft with a clear purpose
Choose an item because it fills a gap, supports a planned loadout, or serves another concrete need shown by your inventory. Then treat any skill progress as an additional benefit. This simple order of decisions prevents a crafting session from becoming a cycle of expenditure whose only justification is the experience itself.

Work technical tools into normal missions
Pick a Tech weapon you can use comfortably and read its firing behavior in the current game. Practice in a manageable encounter before relying on it in a difficult objective. Keep a familiar backup available while learning; experimenting should not require rebuilding your entire character around a weapon you have barely used.
Explosives can also fit a technical routine, but use them where the situation allows a deliberate choice of target and position. The goal is not to add explosions to every encounter. Consider nearby people, the mission objective, and your escape route before using an area effect. A tool that creates a new problem has not improved the run.
Use a simple progress check
After a mission, compare the Engineer bar with your starting point and check your remaining supplies. Ask two separate questions: did the skill advance, and did the equipment plan remain affordable? If progress came at the cost of resources you intended to keep, change the routine before repeating it for several more missions.
Engineer skill shards offer another source of progression when you find them. Treat them as a useful addition rather than the foundation of a route that assumes a specific drop will appear. This keeps the plan workable even when a particular session produces different loot from the one you expected.
Common mistakes and a better priority order
- Crafting unwanted equipment before checking the cost of a planned upgrade.
- Confusing skill milestones with attribute or perk requirements.
- Replacing a comfortable loadout solely to chase an unverified “fastest” method.
- Judging progress by experience alone while ignoring ammunition, components, and failed attempts.
Start with the equipment you need, add technical actions that suit your missions, and review the result. Engineer becomes easier to maintain when it supports your normal play instead of turning every task into a separate resource grind.
